Comparing Our Top Two Software for Contractors
Now that we’ve discussed ServiceTitan and HCP this blog is going to take the information from both of those and compare them. As a quick recap, these are the two biggest software programs we see our clients using, especially those in trades like HVAC, plumbing, etc.
When comparing Housecall Pro and ServiceTitan, there are a lot of things to consider. We’re going to go through usability, reporting, integrations, pricing, and other important features to help you understand where each program wins and where each one falls short.
Overall Look and Usability
Housecall Pro has a much cleaner, more modern interface compared to ServiceTitan. It’s more graphic-oriented, with a simpler layout that’s generally easier to navigate. Customer information, job creation, invoices, and your price book are all laid out in a way that’s easier to understand.
ServiceTitan has a lot more information built into the system. It’s not quite as modern-looking, and it has more information to work through, but that also means more options and flexibility.
At the end of the day, Housecall Pro wins on simplicity, while ServiceTitan offers more customization and functionality.
Reporting
If reporting matters to your business, ServiceTitan is the clear winner.
ServiceTitan allows you to capture a tremendous amount of information and customize reports around different data points. If you want to drill down into your numbers and better understand what’s happening in your business, you can do much more.
Housecall Pro has reporting capabilities, but they’re far less detailed. This is one of the biggest complaints we hear from Housecall Pro users, many of whom end up using third-party applications to get the information they need.
If you want detailed reporting, ServiceTitan wins this category.
Integrations and Accounting
Housecall Pro has traditionally been more open to third-party integrations. If you need an inventory system, price book, or sales presentation tool, you have more flexibility to choose different applications.
ServiceTitan offers more built-in features, but some require additional modules, which adds cost.
Accounting integration is another big difference. Housecall Pro offers a more automated QuickBooks integration, allowing invoices and payments to transfer automatically when everything is configured correctly.
ServiceTitan’s process is more labor-intensive. Even with automatic batching, you may still need to confirm batches, export information, and reconcile everything in QuickBooks.
ServiceTitan’s integration can work, but it takes more attention and additional steps. For accounting integration and third-party flexibility, Housecall Pro wins.
Built-In Features
ServiceTitan has the edge in built-in marketing, inventory management, and customization. Both programs offer service agreements, but ServiceTitan generally provides more functionality.
However, just because something is built into ServiceTitan doesn’t automatically mean it’s the best option available. Third-party applications may offer better features or pricing for your business.
ServiceTitan wins on built-in functionality, while Housecall Pro gives you more flexibility to choose specialized tools.
Pricing
Housecall Pro is generally less expensive. Based on what we commonly see with our clients, ServiceTitan can cost anywhere from 50% to 100% more for a comparable baseline setup.
That’s before adding additional modules for marketing, inventory, or other features.
Actual pricing depends on your business, package, and selected modules, so you’ll want to get current quotes from both providers. Based on what we typically see, Housecall Pro wins this category by a wide margin.
Customer Support
Both programs have their pros and cons when it comes to customer support.
In our experience, Housecall Pro tends to provide better support at higher levels, especially when you need help resolving more complicated issues. However, baseline users may not receive the same level of support as customers paying for higher-tier plans.
ServiceTitan may offer faster initial responses, but getting beyond first-line support can be harder.
The key question is whether you’re getting answers that actually solve your problems, not just how quickly someone responds.
Onboarding and Staff Requirements
Housecall Pro is generally quicker and easier to implement because it requires less customization and fewer setup steps. Many businesses can configure the baseline program and train their employees within one to two months.
ServiceTitan is a bigger undertaking. Depending on your setup and the modules you’re using, onboarding can take three to six months.
Staffing is another consideration. Housecall Pro can work for a one-person operation and scale up to a much larger business. ServiceTitan generally requires more infrastructure, including computers and in-office staff to manage the system properly.
In our experience, businesses considering ServiceTitan should carefully assess whether they have the staff and resources to support it. Five employees may be enough for some businesses, but seven to ten employees may be a more practical starting point for others.
Which Program Is Right for Your Business?
Ultimately, both programs have pros and cons. Housecall Pro generally wins on pricing, usability, accounting integration, and onboarding. ServiceTitan wins on reporting, customization, and built-in functionality.
We have plenty of clients who move from Housecall Pro to ServiceTitan, and plenty who make the opposite switch. The problem is when businesses choose a program without doing their research and end up paying for something that doesn’t fit their needs.
There’s no right or wrong answer for which program is best overall. But there is a right or wrong answer when it comes to which program is best for you and your business.
Before you decide, consider what you need the software to do, what your business can afford, how many employees you have, and how much time you’re willing to invest in setup and training.
