Tax Form Schedule D

About Tax Schedule D

What is the Schedule D Tax Form for and how do I file it?

The Schedule D Tax Form is the Capital Gains and Losses.

The Schedule D works in conjunction with your Tax Form 1040 for the U.S. individuals who are to file a federal income tax return.

The Schedule D form is what most people use to report capital gains and losses that result from the sale or trade of certain property during the year.

Gains and losses from capital assets owned by you. These can include your home, car, boat, furniture, and stocks. There is also a lengthy list of items that do not qualify as capital assets. The IRS knows you have an asset and will send you an IRS Form 1099-S to file with your 1040 and your Schedule D Forms.

However, investors who have sold stocks, bonds, options, or other securities will receive an IRS Form 8949 Sales and Other Dispositions of Capital Assets. The IRS knows if you have Sales and Others and the IRS Form 8949 is to be filed with your 1040 and your Schedule D Forms.
